France legalises assisted dying after parliament adopts landmark law

The French parliament adopted an assisted dying law on Wednesday, fulfilling a promise made by President Emmanuel Macron after his 2022 re-election. The legislation still requires approval from France's highest constitutional authority. If passed, France will join the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada in guaranteeing the right to assisted dying — the most significant social reform since France legalised same-sex marriage in 2012.
