France legalizes assisted dying for terminally ill patients

The French parliament voted on Wednesday to legalise assisted dying for patients over 18 suffering from a serious, incurable and life-threatening illness in an advanced or terminal stage that causes unbearable suffering. Patients must be capable of making the decision freely and with full knowledge of the facts; cases involving only psychological suffering are excluded. France joins Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands among European countries that have legalised some form of assisted dying.
