Manipulators extracted $8.2 million from Polymarket's five-minute Bitcoin contracts

A study by researchers from Stanford and Singapore Management University found that Polymarket's five-minute Bitcoin up/down contracts transferred $8.2 million from retail bettors to a small group of manipulators. Launched on February 12, 2026, the contracts generated over $4 billion in volume and tripled the platform's daily activity. The paper, titled "Settlement Manipulation in Prediction Markets," also found that the manipulation worsened Bitcoin's spot price.
