Previously undetectable 5 cm space debris found in geosynchronous orbit

Researchers have detected fragments of space debris approximately 5 cm in size in geosynchronous orbit — objects previously too small to track. At the extreme velocities of that orbit, even such small pieces carry enormous kinetic energy capable of seriously damaging satellites. Geosynchronous orbit is critical for telecommunications, GPS and weather systems, making the discovery especially alarming.
