Australia plans energy rules for datacentres as groups demand building moratorium
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a legal obligation for large-scale datacentres to underwrite new power supply, pay their full share of grid connection costs, and add as much energy to the grid as they consume. Environmental and community groups responded by calling for a moratorium on new datacentre development until the regulations are in place. The announcement was made during a landmark AI speech at the University of Sydney.
