NASA satellite photos Black Sea glowing turquoise during algae bloom

NASA's PACE satellite captured striking images of the Black Sea glowing turquoise during its annual phytoplankton bloom. The vivid color is caused by massive concentrations of coccolithophores — microscopic organisms with reflective calcium carbonate shells bright enough to be seen from orbit. An astronaut aboard the International Space Station also photographed the bloom spreading through the Bosphorus, revealing swirling ocean currents.
