India bets $20bn on smartphones and chips to break free from China

India announced a $6.5 billion smartphone manufacturing incentive program and a $13.3 billion semiconductor push to deepen its domestic electronics supply chain. The initiative is aimed squarely at reducing dependence on China, which currently dominates global smartphone production. It represents one of the largest such industrial investments in the country's history.
