New York Imposes One-Year Moratorium on Large AI Data Center Construction

New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order on Tuesday imposing a year-long moratorium on construction of new hyperscale data centers consuming 50 megawatts or more of power. The pause gives state agencies time to develop regulations addressing data centers' impact on local communities, including concerns over water usage, noise, and power grid strain. Hochul said the move is necessary to prevent utility bill hikes and resource depletion for New Yorkers.
