Sugar detected in interstellar space, offering clues about life's origins
For the first time, astronomers have detected erythrulose – a sugar essential to RNA and DNA – in a gas-and-dust cloud near the centre of the Milky Way. The finding provides new clues about how the chemical building blocks of life may have reached Earth. Sugars are fundamental components of all known living organisms.
