Elephants communicate up to 10 km away thanks to uniquely built ears

A new study has found that elephants can communicate over distances of up to 10 kilometres using vibrations that travel through the ground. The ability is made possible by unusually large middle-ear bones and ear canals that can seal tightly shut. This anatomical feature allows elephants to detect infrasound signals transmitted through the earth.
