Germany drills exploratory boreholes for geothermal energy in Rhine Basin
Two exploratory boreholes, EB1 and EB2, have been drilled in the Inde Syncline and Weisweiler Horst within Germany's Lower Rhine Embayment to assess geothermal energy potential. Geological and geophysical characterisation of the sites is underway to determine whether the tectonic structures can support renewable energy exploitation. The region was previously known for lignite coal mining, making geothermal a potential successor energy source.
