Japan reclassifies bitcoin and crypto as financial assets under new law

Japan's parliament passed an amendment on Wednesday reclassifying cryptocurrency as a "financial asset," moving bitcoin and other digital assets from the Payment Services Act into the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act (FIEA), which governs stocks, bonds and investment trusts. The change places crypto under a unified investor-protection standard. The new rules are set to take effect within a year, targeting fiscal year 2027.
