Toyota has dropped the first images of the updated 2027 Crown Crossover in Japan, ahead of its official debut in mid-September. The mild styling revisions are only part of the story. Four years after the high-riding fastback arrived in mid-2022, it’s also expected to pick up a slightly stronger hybrid powertrain and a handful of equipment revisions.

The most obvious visual change is how Toyota now handles the two-tone paint scheme, a detail that drew its share of criticism on the original. Everything from the A-pillars back to the D-pillars wears black, tying it to the front bumper, hood, roof, mirrors, and side moldings. The tail does the reverse, switching to a body-colored finish paired with a lightly reworked bumper and horizontal reflectors.

While none of this amounts to much on paper, the reworked surfaces sharpen the perceived proportions and pull the design together. Toyota is also said to replace the current Black shade with a new Neutral Black and change the finish of the lower body cladding from unpainted plastic to Piano Black. The RS trim, meanwhile, gets red brake calipers as standard.

The cabin should carry over largely untouched, though a few pieces of equipment shift around. The Cold Weather Pack reportedly becomes standard across the range, as do the paddle shifters, while the emergency spare tire and digital rearview mirror disappear from the options list. Z and RS trims add a digital key as standard, and the smart key fob moves to a darker Gray Metallic finish.

A Bit More Power From The Hybrid

According to leaked dealer information cited by Japanese outlet Creative Trend , the Toyota Crown Crossover will move up to the fifth-generation hybrid system. This one pairs the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine with a stronger electric motor good for an extra 16 hp (12 kW). The combined output reportedly rises by 5 hp (4 kW) to a healthier 236 hp (176 kW / 239 PS), and the car should spend more of its time running on electricity alone.

The more potent Dual Boost hybrid setup of the flagship Toyota Crown Crossover RS with the turbo 2.4-liter engine and dual electric motors will be carried over, producing the same 344 hp (257 kW / 349 PS).

The refreshed model gets its formal reveal in mid-September, when the full specs and pricing arrive. For context, the current Japanese range runs from ¥5,150,000 ($31,800) to ¥6,700,000 ($41,300). Whether the US-spec version, badged simply as Crown, inherits the same changes for the 2027 model year remains to be seen.

Besides the Crossover, Toyota is also expected to introduce similar updates to the other members of the Crown family , including the Sport and the Sedan.
