id Software dev: Microsoft laid off 136 of 185 staff one day before Doom DLC launch

An anonymous id Software developer told Game Developer that Microsoft laid off 136 of the studio's 185 staff the day before the launch of the Doom: The Dark Ages "Revelation" DLC. It is Microsoft's fifth round of mass layoffs since its $75 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The DLC has received rave reviews on Steam and is one of the top-rated releases of 2026 on OpenCritic. "There are no benefits to being owned by Microsoft — they have destroyed immense amounts of value that I don't even think they're aware of," the source said.
