Gibraltar joins Schengen — border fence with Spain dismantled

Gibraltar officially entered the Schengen Area on 15 July 2026 under a landmark EU-UK treaty, with the border fence separating it from Spain taken down the same day. Passport checks have been relocated to the airport and port. Residents celebrated the end of decades of cumbersome border controls between the territory and mainland Spain.
