Sodium-ion batteries enter mass production as a cheaper, safer alternative to lithium

Sodium-ion batteries are entering mass production and could become a cheaper, safer alternative to lithium-ion cells in electric vehicles and other energy applications, according to Nature (15 July 2026). Sodium is far more abundant and less costly than lithium, giving the technology strong potential to disrupt the EV battery market. Researchers say further development could make sodium-ion cells competitive with today's lithium batteries.
