Bronze Age Upton Lovell Shaman was a woman, ancient DNA analysis reveals
Ancient DNA analysis has confirmed that the Upton Lovell Shaman — a 4,000-year-old Bronze Age skeleton from Wiltshire, England, long depicted in museum displays as a bearded male spiritual leader and metalworker — was in fact female. The grave contains stone axes, metalworking tools and the remains of an elaborate ceremonial cloak, making it one of the most significant Bronze Age burials in Britain. The findings will be featured at the Francis Crick Institute exhibition "We Go Way Back", opening 16 July.
