Relativistic jet reveals intermediate-mass black hole tearing apart a star

Astronomers using the NSF Very Large Array radio telescope detected an extraordinary burst of radio light from a rare cosmic event. An intermediate-mass black hole tore apart a nearby star, producing a powerful relativistic jet observed off-axis. The finding could represent the long-sought "missing link" in understanding how intermediate-mass black holes form and evolve.
