How to avoid the foodborne parasite Cyclospora, according to an infectious disease specialist
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a foodborne parasite transmitted through contaminated food and water, causing explosive diarrhoea and gastrointestinal illness. Infectious disease specialists advise thoroughly washing fresh produce, avoiding raw food of unknown origin, and practising strict hand hygiene. The parasite is not reliably killed by low-temperature cooking, making prevention at the point of food selection especially important.
