Andean mouse survives at 22,000 ft — here's how

A new study reveals that the Andean leaf-eared mouse (Phyllotis vaccarum) lives at elevations of around 22,000 feet (6,700 m) — higher than any other known mammal. The rodents have evolved specialised adaptations that allow them to generate body heat efficiently despite frigid temperatures and extremely low oxygen levels. This makes them the highest-dwelling mammal ever recorded by science.
