Mayan mathematician from the 8th century identified by name for the first time
Archaeologists excavating the ancient Maya city of Xultún in Guatemala have for the first time ever identified a Maya mathematician and astronomer by name. The scholar, who lived in the 8th century, was identified through an inscription found at the site. He is being compared to Copernicus for his extraordinary contributions to astronomy and mathematics over 1,200 years ago.
