NASA's Roman Telescope to detect black holes 11 billion years old via star-shredding events

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, set to launch on August 30, 2026, will be able to detect supermassive black holes that existed up to 11 billion years ago. It will do so by observing tidal disruption events — moments when a black hole shreds a nearby star, causing a burst of brightness visible across vast cosmic distances. Studying these ancient events is expected to shed light on how supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies formed and grew over the universe's history.
