Astronomers map magnetic field of the "Lighthouse" pulsar for the first time

Using NASA's Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), astronomers have for the first time directly mapped the magnetic field surrounding the pulsar PSR J1101−6101, nicknamed the "Lighthouse." The observations confirm that high-energy particles blasted from the rapidly spinning stellar remnant stream along magnetic field lines stretching through the Milky Way. The discovery offers rare insight into how extreme cosmic objects accelerate particles to nearly the speed of light.
