Star HD 7977's ancient flyby altered comet orbits we still see today

A study from the Planetary Science Institute found that the close passage of star HD 7977 near our Solar System triggered a cascade of long-period comets being sent toward the Sun. Researchers suggest the elevated influx of such comets may still be ongoing today. The findings were presented at the American Astronomical Society Division on Dynamical Astronomy meeting.
