Active vs passive noise canceling: what's the difference?

Passive noise cancellation relies on physical acoustic insulation — foam ear tips or tight ear cups — to block sound mechanically. Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones and electronics to generate an inverse sound wave that neutralises ambient noise. ANC works best on low, constant sounds like aircraft engines, while passive isolation more effectively blocks high-frequency noise.
