Why some semi-truck axles are lifted off the ground

Some semi-trucks feature axles that can be lifted off the ground when not needed — these are called lift axles or tag axles. They are raised when the truck is empty or lightly loaded to reduce tyre wear and improve fuel efficiency. When the truck carries a heavy load, the axles are lowered to distribute weight and comply with road weight regulations.
