DNA-shredding CRISPR enzyme selectively destroys cancer cells in mouse tests

Researchers have repurposed a bacterial self-destruct enzyme using CRISPR technology to selectively shred the DNA of diseased cells, including tumour cells, in mouse cancer models. The mechanism targets only abnormal cells, sparing healthy tissue. The findings, published in Nature on 14 July 2026, could represent a new avenue for cancer therapy.
