Deer ked: The "flying tick" that bites hikers in forests
The deer ked is a small parasitic insect that feeds on deer but also attacks humans, burrowing into hair, biting and drinking blood, leaving itchy bumps on the skin. It is commonly called a "flying tick" in Polish media, though it is not related to true ticks. The insect is active mainly in summer and early autumn in forests.
