When it comes to the biggest Netflix original shows of all time, some of the titles that immediately come to mind are Stranger Things and Ozark . Other shows like House of Cards may have been forgotten in the scope of time due to certain controversies surrounding leading stars, but one of the first Netflix original shows that shaped what the service has become was Orange Is the New Black . The show was written and created for TV by Jenji Kohan , and after kicking off the dawn of streaming in 2013, it ran for seven seasons before ending in 2019 — it’s hard to imagine a world nowadays where Netflix puts out seven seasons of a show in as many years.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says they are scouring food supply chain for culprit, which may be lettuce

What is cyclosporiasis, the parasitic illness causing ‘explosive’ diarrhea?

Federal health officials said they expect the outbreaks of cyclospora – a parasite that causes watery, explosive diarrhea – across the US to continue through August as they scour the food supply chain for the culprit.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have identified 1,645 lab-confirmed cases of the parasite; reported that 145 people have been hospitalized; and reported that they have a backlog of 5,100 cases that require more analysis, including interviews.

The lesser-known of just two Japanese Gardens in Ireland, the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens are an enchanting homage to a remarkable writer, traveler and man of the world, and a tranquil place of great curation and beauty.

His relative anonymity is reflected in the location of the garden, tucked away behind a high stone wall on a quiet side-street in Tramore. Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was of Irish-Greek descent, spending his childhood summers in this seaside town, before making a name for himself as a journalist and travel writer in the States. He was lauded as both an engaging storyteller, and an astute chronicler of place and society. While he remains relatively unknown in Ireland, he is still widely celebrated in his adopted country of Japan.

Described as his 'living biography', the series of eleven small interconnected gardens are diverse and beautiful, each one representing a different aspect of his life, work and travels. The suggested route starts at the Victorian Garden, a nod to his happy childhood summers in Tramore.

A winding path takes visitors through his American Journey and onto the amphitheatre-shaped Greek Garden, commemorating his place of birth. A 100 year old olive tree stands at its heart. From this point on, visitors are firmly in Japanese territory, with burbling rockeries and water features, a traditional tea house and garden, and a wooden bridge across a stream, surrounded by woodland.

Moving to Japan had been the turning point in his life: a place where he remained for the rest of his days. As well as lecturing at the University of Tokyo, he received great acclaim for his collections of Japanese ghost stories and supernatural folk tales. He became loved and respected in his adopted country, and there's even a museum dedicated to him in the city of Matsue.

Towards the end of the gardens is the pièce de résistance, the aptly titled Garden of Peace and Harmony. A stone bench is strategically placed for full immersion in nature, overlooking a large garden pond surrounded by trees and plants in a great blaze of colour. Cocooned beneath the trees, visitors can enjoy the hypnotic sound of water trickling over rocks, while the air hums with birdsong.

Towards the end of the route is a dignified memorial: a bronze sculpture of Lafcadio Hearn, donated by the city of Matsue.

LONDON — Andy Burnham pledged Tuesday to end the U.K.’s “cover-up culture” and put “decency back at the heart of the British state.”

In his first House of Commons speech since returning to parliament last month, the Makerfield MP — who is expected to become the next British prime minister on Monday — praised legislation from the departing Keir Starmer government that imposes a duty of candor on public officials.

Burnham said the law will “change the way this country thinks and works about justice,” as it “truly is a rewiring of the state and a passing of power from the authorities to the hands of ordinary people.”

With parliament rising for the summer recess on Thursday, it will likely be Burnham’s only intervention from the backbenches of the House of Commons.

The Public Office (Accountability) Bill — widely called the Hillsborough law — is named after the 1989 tragedy in the Sheffield stadium where 97 Liverpool fans died following a crush.

The draft law imposes a duty on public bodies to tell the truth and cooperate with inquiries after survivors and the families of those who died campaigned for decades to find out what had happened. Subsequent investigations found police cover-ups and false narratives had been spread about the circumstances of the Hillsborough deaths.

‘Campaign for truth’

Burnham, who is originally from Liverpool, expressed his pride at seeing “this bill plant the values of the city of my birth at the heart of this country.”

He has repeatedly spoken about how being heckled by fans during a speech at Liverpool Football Club’s Anfield ground when he was culture secretary in 2009 changed his political outlook.

In what will be seen as a statement of intent, Burnham said the legislation will help other victims of injustice, citing the families of people killed in the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire in London, nuclear test veterans and sub-postmasters who were falsely accused of stealing money.

“This bill advances all of these just causes and the campaign for truth and justice does not stop here. Indeed, it accelerates from here,” he said.

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey picked up on Burnham’s name-check of other efforts, challenging him to “put right those scandals” when he takes office.

Burnham adopted a conciliatory tone towards the current prime minister, praising his “commitment to a country based on justice and fairness.” He described the Hillsborough legislation as Starmer’s “legacy.”

Starmer resigned as leader of the ruling Labour Party last month, acknowledging he had lost the support of his MPs, who feared an election wipeout after a terrible set of local election results in May.

Speaking about the Hillsborough tragedy in the same House of Commons session, Starmer said of the coverup, that the state had deployed “all its power to obstruct justice and truth” as a “stain on our history.”
