First-ever named Maya astronomer identified from murals found at Xultun, Guatemala
Researchers analysing murals discovered in 2010 at the site of Xultun in Guatemala have for the first time identified a Maya astronomer by name, from the Classic period (AD 250–900). The inscriptions found in one building resembled scientific working notes recording the movements of the Moon and planets. The discovery ends the anonymity that had long surrounded the scholars behind the Maya's complex astronomical calculations.
