American bird cherry: from communist-era jam ingredient to invasive forest pest in Poland
The American bird cherry, whose dark berries were once harvested across Poland for jams, juices and liqueurs during the communist era, is now classified as an invasive species. The plant has spread so aggressively through Polish forests that foresters are actively working to eradicate it, as it displaces native species and disrupts local ecosystems.
