FDA approved Zyn nicotine pouches without knowing their full composition
FDA toxicologist Christy Leppanen revealed that the agency approved Zyn nicotine pouches without fully understanding their composition, particularly regarding microplastics exposure. Four years into the review process and shortly before approval, Leppanen ran informal kitchen tests after a late-2024 conference discussion raised doubts about whether the pouches dissolve in the mouth. Her findings suggest the FDA may have greenlighted an addictive product without adequately understanding its physical properties.
