Drug metabolism AI contest shows bigger models aren't always better

An AI competition focused on predicting drug metabolism found that larger models do not consistently outperform smaller ones. The contest centred on the pregnane X receptor (PXR), which regulates an enzyme responsible for metabolising around 50% of all marketed drugs. The finding is significant for the pharmaceutical industry, which often discovers metabolism problems only late in drug development.
