99% of a core-collapse supernova's energy escapes invisibly as neutrinos

A core-collapse supernova releases an enormous amount of energy — equivalent to ten billion suns in visible light — yet that represents only about 1% of the total energy of the event. The remaining 99% is carried away by neutrinos, nearly massless particles that pass through all matter almost without interacting. This is why supernovae, despite their spectacular brightness, are so difficult to fully study.
