NHTSA may allow robotaxis without steering wheels — Tesla stands to gain most

The head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has indicated it may no longer make sense to require manual controls in fully autonomous robotaxis, raising the prospect of a rule change that would allow steering-wheel-free vehicles on US roads. Tesla, which originally designed its Cybercab without conventional controls, stands to be among the biggest beneficiaries. Recent Cybercab prototypes have nonetheless been spotted testing with a steering wheel and pedals, suggesting current rules still apply.
