Japan admits weak espionage laws let Russia use it as a spy hub for Ukraine war
Japan's government acknowledged the need to better counter foreign espionage after the New York Times reported that Russia had turned the country into a "den of spies" and a procurement hub for dual-use technology used in its war against Ukraine. The investigation, published Sunday, cited Japan's weak espionage laws as the key enabler. A government spokesman said the issue would be addressed with "even greater rigour."
