Five 2,300-Year-Old Celtic Iron Shackles Found in France, Revealing Slave Trade

Archaeologists discovered five pairs of iron shackles at a 2,300-year-old Celtic settlement in Allonnes, in France's Loire Valley, during excavations in 2019. The finds were publicly announced on July 9 by the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP). The site, established in the third century B.C., was home to specialist metalworkers and, the discovery suggests, slave traders — making the shackles an extremely rare archaeological find.
