New World screwworm spreading toward US – eradication may take years

The New World screwworm fly, a parasitic insect whose larvae infest living flesh, is spreading rapidly through Central American wildlife and pushing toward the US. Conservation cameras set up to monitor illegal cattle movement captured wildlife heavily infected with the parasite. Scientists warn that current eradication efforts are unlikely to contain the spread, and pushing it back south could take years.
