UK locks pharma patent protections into Switzerland trade deal, raising NHS cost fears

As part of a new trade deal with Switzerland, the UK has agreed to freeze existing pharmaceutical patent protection rules, preventing either country from shortening exclusivity periods or bringing cheaper generic medicines to market more quickly. It is the first time the UK has explicitly written drug patent rules into a trade deal. Critics warn this could raise medicine costs for the NHS and curtail the government's ability to regulate in the public interest.
