Martha Lillard, last U.S. iron lung polio patient, dies at 78 in Oklahoma
Martha Lillard, the last known U.S. polio patient reliant on an iron lung, died on June 26 in Oklahoma at the age of 78. She was diagnosed with polio at age five, and doctors did not expect her to live past 20. Her younger sister Cindy McVey told the Associated Press that Lillard had the enthusiasm and drive to make the most of her life.
