Samsung overtakes Apple in worst smartphone quarter in 13 years

Global smartphone shipments fell 11% year-on-year in Q2 2025 — the weakest second quarter since 2013 — as AI-driven demand for DRAM and NAND chips caused component shortages and widespread price hikes. Samsung reclaimed the top spot with a 24% global market share, outpacing Apple despite the difficult market conditions. Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo were hit hardest, recording double-digit shipment declines as rising memory costs squeezed the budget and mid-range segments.
