UK Companies Rush to Appoint Chief AI Officers — What's Holding the Rest Back?

HSBC, Lloyds and the UK government all appointed their first Chief AI Officers in early 2026. Nearly half of Britain's biggest companies now have dedicated AI leaders, with 42% of those appointments made in the past year alone. In financial services, the figure reaches 69%, well above the 46% cross-industry average, according to Thoughtworks research.
