GM grades suppliers on automation levels, threatening future contracts

General Motors has been asking its major suppliers since March 2025 to rate their level of automation on a five-point scale, with the aim of pushing them to adopt more robotics and artificial intelligence in manufacturing. Suppliers that fail to meet GM's automation requirements risk losing future business with the company. GM says the initiative will build a "resilient, world-class" supply chain, though critics warn it could cost human jobs.
