Macron urges European defence unity in final speech to French military

French President Emmanuel Macron delivered his tenth and final address to the armed forces on Monday, warning against nationalism and calling for deeper European defence cooperation. He argued that building military capabilities separately within Europe is "absurd" at a time when the continent is rearming. Macron boasted of steep increases in French defence spending during his tenure. Marine Le Pen, currently leading polls ahead of next year's election, has signalled she would significantly reduce France's role in NATO if elected.
