Scientists build new thermodynamic framework for real, ever-changing black holes

Scientists have developed a new mathematical framework that applies the laws of thermodynamics to real, dynamic black holes — not just perfectly stable ones, as previous models required. The advance could improve understanding of black hole mergers, evaporation and the gravitational wave signals detected by observatories such as LIGO. Researchers hope it will also bring physicists closer to unifying quantum mechanics with general relativity.
