EU to set 13 as minimum age for social media access without parental supervision

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on 13 July that the EU will set a minimum age of 13 for accessing social media without parental supervision. An expert group she commissioned last year published a report recommending that children under 13 have only limited, parent-supervised access to platforms. Von der Leyen framed the issue as protecting children from platforms rather than restricting children from content.
