Tall and small tropical trees equally vulnerable to drought, study finds

A study published in Nature on 13 July 2026 found that tall tropical trees called dipterocarps have evolved a water-transport system that counteracts gravity and resists water stress. As a result, both tall and small tropical trees are equally vulnerable to drought. The finding challenges the prevailing assumption that taller trees face greater drought risk.
