Ever since the first look at The Odyssey emerged, a small sub-section of the audience has critiqued the lack of both Greek accents and archaic language in Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's epic poem. Yes, Tom Holland's Telemachus even says 'dad' in one scene – complete with an American accent that seems more at home in Queens than Ithaca.

There have even been some, remarkably, who have even pointed towards the historical inaccuracies of soldiers' helmets. In case you need reminding, this is a tale with Greek gods, monsters, and magic.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Nolan has downplayed any discourse surrounding his upcoming release, explaining his directorial choices as a way to ensure the story remained approachable for all.

"When you read the poem, it's very earthy and accessible," Nolan says of the foundational classic that charts Odysseus' arduous journey home after his exploits in the Trojan War.

"So, what I wanted to do with this film was really take a modern audience and throw them into a very relatable world, an exotic world, a world that they've hopefully never seen before in film. But I wanted them to connect with the emotional life of the characters, and so I did not want to fall into the trap of sort of reproducing the kind of Hollywood of the 1950s or '60s, a lot of which was based on the kind of romantic art and so forth that it reinterpreted Greek myths and the classical world."

The director, who was once attached to helm Troy in the early 2000s, concludes, "We wanted to try and be a little fresher than that, [a] little more immediate and accessible."

The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Zendaya, is released in cinemas on July 17.

Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu ( Birdman , The Revenant ) is finally lifting the curtain on his upcoming film Digger , starring Tom Cruise in the titular role. While the movie has been in the works for a while, all the previously released information has revealed very little detail on what the film will actually be about or who Tom Cruise's character is. One trailer even capitalized on Cruise's legendary career rather than the new movie itself. That is finally over now, as the first official trailer for the film lets audiences in on the wild ride Digger is shaping up to be.

General Motors wants its major suppliers to become highly automated.

Some fear that not meeting GM’s demands could impact future business.

Company is asking suppliers to rank their level of automation on a 5-point scale.

Several GM suppliers could lose out on future business if they do not meet the requirements of a new automation policy announced by the manufacturer. The novel program leans hard on robotics and artificial intelligence to overhaul how parts get built, and GM says it will create a “resilient, world-class” supply chain, though it may come at the expense of human jobs.

In March, GM started sending out a survey to its suppliers as part of the launch of its Overall Automation Maturity Index (OAMI). The premise is quite simple. Suppliers have been asked to audit their manufacturing operations and score their level of automation , using a list of criteria from GM. The assessment covers the entire manufacturing process, from raw material purchasing through production and final delivery. In some cases, GM is also auditing supplier plants

Five Levels, One High Bar

There are five different levels of automation. They start with manual and extend to include basic mechanization, semiautomation, integrated automation, and smart factory/adaptive automation. According to Crain’s Detroit , GM is asking a lot from its suppliers, setting them a target of 4.5 out of 5. Several supplier executives told Crain’s they believe the expectation is to work toward that target or risk missing future business, even though GM says there is no single deadline for achieving it.

The stakes aren’t hypothetical. Around 50 Fanuc cobots recently went in at GM’s Factory Zero in Detroit, where more than 1,000 workers remain laid off, and the UAW is furious. Union president Shawn Fain has cast artificial intelligence and mass automation as a profound threat, branding the shift a fight for humanity.

Although GM insists the policy is not a mandate and that suppliers have not been given deadlines to achieve autonomy targets, some suppliers believe that those who fail to meet the standards could lose out on future business. The car manufacturer insists it wants to help its suppliers.

GM Has Its Say

“Ultimately, we are here to partner with and help suppliers set benchmarks and increase their productivity, safety, quality, and competitiveness,” GM spokesman Patrick Sullivan told the publication. “Our suppliers determine how best to run their operations, and we look to work alongside those who share our commitment to continuously improving how we safely deliver the highest quality of vehicles for our customers.”

Making significant automation changes might be hard for some suppliers. Many are concerned about what it costs, who funds it, and how any savings get split with GM. Others question whether the policy forces automation into plants where it doesn’t belong.

What A Perfect Score Could Look Like

For suppliers to score a rating of 5, they will need to have very few workers actually working hands-on to build parts. In fact, human operators are simply there to serve as supervisors, strategic planners, and exception managers, with minimal direct involvement in operations. It’s a sign of things to come, where automation and robots are shaping up to take millions of jobs across several industries.

TL;DR

Nintendo is reportedly evaluating a future Switch 2 model featuring a 1,920 x 1080 FHD rigid OLED panel supplied by Samsung Display.

If greenlit, development will begin at the end of this year, targeting mass production for late 2027 or early 2028 to extend the console’s lifecycle.

The upgrade is not guaranteed due to a stark price gap between LCD and OLED panels, compounded by skyrocketing semiconductor and memory costs.

Nintendo recently announced that a Switch 2 with a replaceable battery is coming this autumn, but it seems the company has other variants in mind for the future. Nintendo is reportedly also evaluating the launch of a new OLED variant for the Switch 2, which would bump the screen resolution to FHD (1,920 x 1,080) from the first-generation Switch OLED’s HD.

A new report from ZDNet Korea (via Jukan05 on X ) indicates that Nintendo is considering using rigid OLED panels for this upcoming Switch 2 version. Samsung Display, which supplied the panels for the first-generation Switch OLED, is reportedly angling to secure the contract for the new model as well.
