8-year-old's death forces Ingushetia authorities to admit River Sunzha pollution

Residents of Russia's Republic of Ingushetia had complained for decades about illegal sewage being discharged into the Sunzha River, but authorities took no action. It took the death of an eight-year-old boy in the river for officials to finally acknowledge the serious pollution problem. Activist Ruslan Malsagov described the Sunzha as containing "the whole periodic table". Local residents publicly accused the authorities of lying for years.
