Scientists warn China's 50-year "Green Great Wall" is failing to stop desertification
For fifty years, workers in northern China have deployed a technique called "straw checkerboards" to combat the advance of desert sands as part of the so-called Green Great Wall project. Scientists have issued a fresh warning that despite half a century of effort, desertification in the region has not been brought under control. Experts are calling for a review of the methods and environmental strategies being used.
